Biblical Principles of Unity and Fellowship (Part 3 of 4)
At every turn, the doctrine of unity in diversity, which allows ongoing fellowship in spite of doctrinal disagreement, is unsupported by the word of God. It must be rejected as a doctrine of man (Gal. 1:8-10).
White Unto Harvest: The Issues Before Us (Foy E. Wallace, Jr.)
The fight against societies, organizations, centralization of authority, and all that belongs to digression in general, so valiantly made in Tennessee and Texas fifty and sixty years ago, shall be fought all over again. The Lord has many thousands who have not bowed the knee to Baal — and shall not! From every point of the compass they shall rally to the call for truth and right. Our fathers have not fought in vain; their sons shall catch the torch of truth and hold it high. Let advocates of error be fully warned; there are a mighty host who say with us, They shall not pass!
Queries and Explications: Christian Women Working Outside the Home
In this increasingly materialistic society, the danger of the home being distorted and moved away from its God designed order is ever apparent. Modern cultural and societal trends are effeminizing men and masculizing women. It is a perversion. Twisted children, whose souls are torn and bent out of their natural state, are what we have to show for a generation which has grown up without a mother in the home to nurture and to nourish, to guide and to govern, and to love and to labor. Indeed, for some there will be hell to pay for their neglect and abandonment of God’s pattern for the home and family relationship.
Solid Food: Text and Context (Is 2 John 9 Limited in Application Only to Gnosticism)
It is a clear violation of Biblical hermeneutical rules to limit context as many are attempting to do with 2 John 9-11. Truth will always be truth in every age and in similar situations. Error must not be permitted to hide behind a supposed “limited context” which will permit a modern violation of a contextual principle clearly established in scripture.
Evidences of Faith: A Man Named James
Josephus’ account provides us with corroborating testimony not only of Jesus’ existence, but also of the fact that He was called Christ. It also harmonizes with the New Testament claim that Jesus had a brother named James who became a prominent disciple, and that the early disciples were persecuted by the sanhedrim. These things being so, we have yet one more piece of evidence to suggest that the biblical account is accurate and reliable.
The Simple Gospel: Romans and Salvation
The plan of salvation is found in the Book of Romans. Not only does Paul tell us what God has done for us through His grace and His Son’s sacrifice (6:23), he also sets forth men’s responsibilities in order to be saved. Even Luther acknowledged that men had to do something when he taught the need for faith. The difference is that he believed that was the totality of men’s obligations whereas the inspired Apostle taught additional requirements.
Voices from the Past: Preacheritis (James P. Needham)
While preacheritis cannot always be controlled by the preacher, that is, some brethren will just be that way, let us be determined not to lend a hand in our own exaltation, nor that of another. Let us all look to the one Head of the church, the one Author and Finisher of our faith, the one Apostle and High Priest of our profession, the one Lamb of God, the one Alpha and Omega–the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (Eph. 1:22-23; Heb. 12:2; 3:1; Jn. 1:29; Rev. 1:8)!
The Distaff: “Mama, Do Angels Have Wings?”
“Mama, do angels have wings?” No dear, they usually looked just like men though sometimes they had special bright clothes. Guess what, we know the name of two angels, Gabriel and Michael. Can you say Gabriel? May God bless all mama’s and their children.
Editorial: Playing Powerball! Is It Sinful?
The lottery is already causing problems in the Lord’s church. Some who profess to be a children of God are beginning to press the point, asking, “What is wrong with playing the lottery? What possible harm could come from it?” There is no possible way to justify playing the lottery! There is no possible justification for any type of gambling, even if it is sponsored by the state. It doesn’t matter if it is buying one ticket, or buying 1,000. It doesn’t matter if you can afford it or not. It is sin!
Marriage Divorce & Remarriage: “Bound” and “Loosed”
By keeping “marriage” and being “bound” by law distinctive in our minds, we can see that two people can be bound and scripturally married to one another (Matthew 19:5-6; Romans 7:2). One can be unmarried, but bound (I Corinthians 7:10-11). One mate can be unmarried but bound, while the other mate is free to remarry (Matthew 19:9). And, One mate can be bound to his first mate, while unscripturally married to another (Mark 6:17-18, Romans 7:2-3).
Marriage Divorce & Remarriage: Divorce & Remarriage Doctrines
There are few families today that have not been touched by divorce. As society continuously degrades into worldliness and rebellion towards God, there is a reciprocal effect upon God’s people. Many of the current issues concerning this doctrine have risen due to complex situations in the lives of all people. There was not as much controversy in times past, because the problem was not so prevalent.
Marriage Divorce & Remarriage: Adultery – What Is It? … And then Some
Is an adulteress one who sees the Justice of the Peace to contract a second marriage? Or, is it not true that the Bible portrays the adulterer and adulteress as ones who have sex outside their God-ordained marriage or ones who have sex with a married person?
Associate Editorial: Marriage Divorce & Remarriage – Fellowship and the Divorce Controversy
The scriptures teach clearly that we must not have fellowship with fruits of unrighteousness or darkness. While some brethren apply this uniformly to sinful practices like instrumental music, institutionalism, etc., they are willing to forsake truth and extend fellowship to unrighteous divorces.
Associate Editorial: Marriage Divorce & Remarriage – An Introduction
Marriage is for life, but if one mate commits sexual immorality, that one can be put away, divorced for that infidelity, and the innocent one in that divorce has the right to be married to another. Jesus speaks of but ONE exception and one exception only to the law of marriage for life. It is not a hard law to understand, but, in too many cases, a hard law to apply. Is that God’s fault for making the law or man’s for not wanting to submit to it?
Biblical Principles of Unity and Fellowship (Part 2 of 4)
My dear brethren, nowhere in the Scriptures does grace mean that we may ‘agree to disagree’ over the revealed doctrine of Jesus Christ. This is not the oneness shared by the Father and Son, and it is not the oneness we are to promote. (Jno. 17:20-21; Eph. 4:1-6).
White Unto Harvest: Family Matters
“This is not a good time for my family.” “I’m not sure how my kids will handle it if I’m away from home for several…
Queries and Explications: Comments on 2 John 9-11
Those who cringe and apologize for the truth when it is preached and who disclaim and despise those who teach the doctrine of the Lord are not friends of Christ (2 Tim. 1:15; 4:14-16). They who defend the integrity of those who teach error while they use every veiled and hidden slur against those who oppose error are not loyal to the Lord. “Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel” (2 Tim. 1:8).
Solid Food: Does Acts 6 Authorize Women in Business Meetings?
Acts 6 is a part of the inspired record that teaches us how to allow the church to function under male leadership while respecting all the principles taught elsewhere in the word of God regarding the role of men and women in the kingdom of God.
