3 – Is Jesus the Messiah?

Stan uses the Bible claims of the resurrection of Jesus Christ to argue He is the annointed of God, the Savior of the world.

Jesus and John at the Jordan River

Truly, Jesus came to do the will of God. This is evident in His words, and in His actions. From His baptism in the beginning of His ministry until His decision to carry through to the cross (“O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will,” Matthew 26:39), Jesus showed His willingness to “fulfill all righteousness.” He serves as a wonderful example to us. Harold Fowler puts it well in his commentary on Matthew, “Nobody will ever form a better ethic than ‘doing all that God tells us to do’” (pg. 116). Wise words to live by!

Holiness as Defined by Christ

As Christians, we must recognize that God expects us to live holy before him. If we recognize the exacting standards found in the old covenant, it will help us to understand what He requires of us today.

The Simple Gospel: Christ, The Source of All Authority

Simply put, direction for the Christian in his life must ultimately have as its source the Christ. Those who foist upon us their own opinions and directives practice lawlessness, and stand condemned. Do you want to enter the kingdom of heaven? Then follow Christ, not man.

Walking Worthy: The Mount of Transfiguration

The appearance of the temporarily glorified Jesus foreshadowed the day of Pentecost when the permanently glorified master would be sitting upon David’s throne with all authority in heaven and earth (Matthew 28:18-20), the King of kings and Lord of lords (1 Timothy 6:15). His future resurrection body was on display that day, the figure he would take on forever when he shed his earthly tabernacle after death.

In the Steps of the Savior: Malchus – Recipient of Compassion Amidst Treachery

If we come as believers in Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God, we can easily learn His will for us. Believers are told that we must confess our faith in Him (Romans 10:10). We are also told to change our will away from the world and towards Christ in repentance of our sins and then be baptized for remission of our sins (Acts 2:38). Our lives are then to be directed by His will in all things commanded by Christ (Matthew 28:18-20). We never learn of Malchus obeying Christ despite the compassion shown. Will you ignore Christ’s gifts to you or will you obey Him? The healing He offers to you today is far greater than that received by Malchus.

In the Steps of the Savior: Jesus and Plain Preaching

There is no convoluted, legal jargon in Jesus’ commands to us today. We must simply obey His will as plainly declared in the Gospel. Whether those commands regard the need to love our neighbor, the requirements of godliness in morality, or the plan of salvation, we must look to the clear teaching of Christ and obey it.

Christ: The Divine Depository of All Religious Authority

All religious institutions, conceptions, and actions that find their authority outside the law of Christ are sinful and are destined to be rooted up by God (Matthew 15:13). The religion of Christ was designed by God in eternity, and must remain as delivered unto us by the Holy Spirit in the Bible. To add to it or to take from it or to preach other than its precepts is to incur the wrath of God (Galatians 1:8,9; 2 John 9-11; Revelation 22:18,19).

The Land of Jesus: “There They Crucified Him…” (Luke 23:33)

Yes, there is a parking lot near a place remarkably like the place described in the Bible as “the place of the skull.” Busses and taxis come and go regularly as though unconcerned by the momentous events that brought eternal life to man. But it really doesn’t matter. Jerusalem isn’t holy any more, and parking lots cannot diminish from the holy events that took place nearby. Besides, Jesus isn’t buried in that tomb, even if it was the actual tomb occupied by our Lord. He is risen!

In the Steps of the Savior: The Person of Christ

While on earth, Jesus claimed to be of the one divine nature the Old Testament revealed. After Jesus declared to the Jews that Abraham looked forward to His coming, the Jews asked how He could act as if He knew Abraham though He was not yet 50 years old. Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM” (John 8:58). The claim was an unmistakable identification with the I AM (God) of the Old Testament (cf. Exodus 3:14).

Evidences of Faith: Nero’s Scapegoats

It is good to know that the facts are on our side, and we do not need to be intimidated by the false assertions and arrogant postulations of the academics. We can, along with our Savior, give praise to God, who hid the gospel from those who regard themselves as too “wise and prudent” to humbly accept revealed truth, but made the glorious words of salvation readily available to “babes” (Matthew 11:25). The word of God has never been well-suited to those who think that mankind can solve all of his own problems. Rather, it is for those who recognize that “it is not in man who walks to direct his own steps” (Jeremiah 10:23).

Hebrews 7:25 also says that the only ones Christ makes intercession for are those “that come to God by him” i.e. Christians! Seeing that this is true, only Christians have that right to the mediator, the daysman, between us and God.

White Unto Harvest: Jesus and Foreign Evangelism

While Jesus may never have left the borders of his native land he nonetheless amply equips by his example those who aspire to do so. He shows us that such work is serious business, not to be undertaken lightly or without preparation, and that his example of love must be continually born in mind. Jesus is the example for many who have not yet preached in foreign lands but may be able to do so. Hopefully, this article will be an encouragement for them.

Evidences of Faith: The Snake on the Pole

The result of the snake bite was death, as is the case with sin. The bronze serpent was raised up on a pole for all to see, as was Jesus on the cross. And Jesus on the cross, like the snake on the pole, represented the very thing for which He was the cure. Thus the incident with the fiery serpents provides us with another vivid foreshadow of Jesus, a foreshadow written 1500 years before He offered Himself for us.

The Glorious Church Reflected in The Promised Messiah

We have noticed that the Messiah was promised, and how God faithfully kept His word. Jesus came and was everything the prophets said he would be. He did all they said he would do (Jn. 19:28). God has also promised that Jesus will come again, at which time the dead will be raised, all will be judged, the earth will be destroyed, and either heaven or hell will be our eternal home (cf. Matt. 25:31-46; 1 Thess. 4:13-18; Rev. 20:11-15; 2 Pet. 3:7-14). Do you believe the promise?

Solid Food: Ye Are Gods (John 10:34)

“I and the Father are one ” is equivalent to saying “I am the Son of God” (v 30, 36). This was a clear declaration of deity by Jesus and the Jews took it as such (v. 33). Only in a representative sense have men ever been called “gods.” However, one has lived among us who was more than just man. Jesus was God in the flesh (John 1:14; Col. 2:9). His works confirm it. His words attest to it. He has power to save and to protect your soul. Do you believe it? Are you his sheep?
