Video Script: Does God Exist? (1)

(Editor’s Note: A while back, I started a series of five minute videos on YouTube, designed to teach fundamental principles concerning God, the Bible, Salvation and the Church.  To see the videos themselves, look elsewhere on this site, or click here. Because the scripts are designed for verbal speech, the style is significantly different from my usual writing.  It dawned on me that the scripts from that series might benefit some for use as bulletin articles or other teaching materials.  As of this posting, seven videos have been produced.  The scripts to these will be posted in the next couple of weeks.  After that, each new script will be posted following the release of the video. Feel free to use these!)

Does God exist? This is perhaps the most important question that man can ask. I freely admit that I can’t prove His existence empirically. That is, I can’t see Him, touch Him, or perceive Him with the five senses I possess. Others could speak more authoritatively on the subject. Moses, for one, who spoke directly with God. Our Lord Himself is another, as he descended from Heaven and God’s presence, and returned there after His resurrection. (Of course, that is another thing to prove, and we will reserve that for another broadcast).

I accept that God exists on Faith. I believe. Mind you, it is not a blind faith. I contend there is compelling evidence of His existence. In fact, we are surrounded by it!

There is an argument made for God’s existence that is commonly called the “teleological argument.” The word “teleological” is taken from the greek work “telos”, meaning “end, or purpose.” The argument is that our universe, nature, exhibits purpose or design. Unless such a perception is in error, the logical consequence is that there is a Designer!

This is something we observe daily. We see a camera, and recognize that someone must have designed and made that camera. And yet the eye is a much more delicate and sophisticated instrument.

We see a computer, a machine that takes one’s and zero’s, and through sheer computational power translates those two digits into pictures, sounds, and wonderful tools for productivity. It is obviously the product of man, and yet can not even approximate the intelligence and power of the human brain.

We could note other things about the human body… the heart, the lungs, the inner ear, and wonder at the sophistication of the design. The human body is aesthetically pleasing, amazingly durable, and far superior to any artificial efforts that even the most brilliant of men have made to replicate it.

And that is just the human body! The same observations can be made throughout the physical universe, considering objects both animate and inanimate. The Psalmist noted the power of such observations: “The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.  Day unto day utters speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge.  There is no speech nor language Where their voice is not heard” (Psalm 19:1-3).

The evidence that our Universe is the product of Design is compelling. Paul wrote in Romans 1 that those who do not see it are “without excuse.” They deny it, not because the can’t see it, but because they don’t want to see it. Why? Because if they admit an Omnipotent and Omniscient Designer exists, then they are compelled to admit their obligations to Him!

In future videocasts, we will examine some of those obligations. But for now, just think about the Cosmos, the Stars, the planets, our own wonderful world. Consider the largest mountain, and the smallest plant. Think about our own wonderful body, and consider the wonder of the process of thinking itself! The evidence is right there in front of you. Yes, God exists!
